Is it ok to send only child to school outside village?

Our only boy starts kindergarten next year. There are two schools in our village, neither very good. 17 min drive away we have enrolled him in a lovely, very good school where he can go all the way through in the same school. I am concerned though that as the school is outside our village, he won’t have many friends right where we live. We do have him in 2 activities within the village however. Is this enough? Will he miss as out with regards to friends right where we live, or is it better to focus on him getting the best education? Thanks in advance for helpful comments. Leigh
